The time has come for us to support some of the recognized Czech summer festivals. What we mean by recognized festivals is mainly the Obscene Extreme and Brutal Assault. The purpose of this special report is to give you a response from some of the main performers before these festivals take place. Instead of beating you up again with individual band profiles, as you can read in thousands of other websites, we bring you an actual mini interview related just to each particular festival. Enjoy the reading and see you in the summer! Martin, Adolf & The Suffering Webzine

Having released a new album War of Attrition through Relapse Records, DYING FETUS is going to travel once again across the sea to Europe to play new material from this killer release. Guitarist Mike Kimball replied to our questions related to the band’s upcoming festival performance at the Brutal Assault 2007:

Do you know the Brutal Assault Festival? Any references from other bands? Are you looking forward to playing there?

We definitely know the Brutal Assault name and have been very excited to play this fest ever since we were booked for it.

Can you recall your earlier performance in the Czech Republic? Any specific memories from the past?

What I remember most from our last show in Prague was how crazy the crowd was, with a lot of people jumping on and off the stage. I always love coming to the Czech Republic, it’s a nice place and we have good friends and great fans there.

DYING FETUS

What has been your best festival performance so far in your history of festival shows?

For me it’s definitely the Fury Fest in Le Mans, 2004. Everything about that show was awesome, for me at least. Great crowd, great sound on stage, and the camaraderie with the other bands was brilliant. We played Graspop the next day, which was also an amazing experience, although our set that day was not quite as good as we had expected, we still had fun.

Is it helpful for DYING FETUS to play larger festivals where most fans are going to see mainly the headliners?

We’ve played very early on the bill and still had thousands of people watching, so I would definitely say it is helpful to us. Moreover, the energy of playing the larger festivals is incredible, and of course it is always cool to hang out with all the other bands, which are often bands you might not share stages with otherwise. Larger festivals are a unique experience that shouldn’t be missed if you get the chance.

What would you like to share with fans who are planning to go to the Brutal Assault this year? What can they expect from DYING FETUS?

Fans should expect DYING FETUS to sound as brutal as always, with plenty of classic favorite songs in our set as well as our best and most crushing new material. Our new lineup is the most solid it’s ever been, so I am very excited for us to get out there and continue supporting our new album by playing some killer shows!

It is more than symbolic that just on 5th July a brand new album Tanz, Grosny, tanz by Yacoepsae a hard core band from Germany will be released by Obscene Prod. The singer and guitar player Stoffel explains why it is going to be a hard test even for such experienced OEF performers this year:

You have played great shows at OEF. So, you can compare it to other fests. What, if, is special or unique about OEF?

Did we? I’m not sure ´bout that, because we actually really dislike „open air festivals“ and we never played on big events like that before. OEF is an absolutely exception (whoops, I forgot to mention the „Maryland Death Fest“ last year, but this one’s been in a club). At least we think, we fit better in small and dirty clubs/ squads, because we are just a three-piece-band without a special performance or similiar things and we don’t like big wide stages – we are afraid to play in front of so many people ...
Nevertheless, the OEF is an awesome event. We’ve been there for two times so far and it was really funny.

Do you think it makes any sense to organise a summer festival like OEF just for extreme bands?

No, it definitely makes no sense, but on the other hand Curby is a greedy bastard with dollarsigns in his eyes and so he’s up to stealing people’s hard earned money with a really shitty and expensive festival.
To be serious, of course it makes sense. The best proof is to see people from all over the world, great bands (ok, some of them are boring in my opinion, but at least it depends on everybody’s personal taste) and so on ... There’s nothing left to say. If somebody dislike such happenings, he’d better prefer to stay home. It’s easy ...

YACOEPSAE

What is YACOEPSAE`s experience with playing big summer festivals?

Sorry, we just played two times on such festivals, but you may count our 2nd appearance at OEF 2005 only, because our set was during a „normal“ time in the evening. Our first appearance – as far as I remember – was early in the rainy morning at four ´o clock in front of 100 people or so (we were the final band on the billing). I remember, it was a really stormy night and the whole festival has been almost cancelled. During the gig of EXHUMED there was a big break and nobody knew if the following bands would even play their sets ... At least everything went fortunately well. I guess, Curby has to change his slogan „silence sucks“ into „bad weather during festival time sucks“ ...

What is special for you when playing a summer festival? Do you like it better than a usual club tour or the other way round?

To be honest, we prefer – as I wrote before – small venues, because there’s no big distance to the audience and we got more feeling while playing our crappy noise. On the other hand, the special point at OEF is to meet lots of well-known friends/ bands we shared the stage with for several times and the atmosphere in general. Everytime we’ve been there we had a really great time with lots of fun and we can’t wait to be there in three weeks. But this time I think it will be hard for us, because we have to enter the stage straight after BRUTAL TRUTH ... Thank you, Curby (Grrrr ...)

Any message to the fans who are going to come to OEF 2007? What can the fans be looking forward to from YACOEPSAE?

Fans? I wonder if we really have fans ... Uhm, I guess, they may expect the same noise as usual, hehe ... Just listen to our new masterpiece of boredom on Obscene Productions: „Tanz, Grosny, tanz ...“ („Dance, Grosny, dance ...“)! But we’d better say: „Tanz, Obscene, tanz ...“
See you in the pit!!

Do you remember the crashed microphone aginst the head of INHUMATE`s singer on OEF 2003? Fred, the bass player of the grind/death quartet, told us about what this icon of French underground plan for this year`s show, why he likes OEF and dislikes the word „fans“:

You have played great shows at OEF. So, you can compare it to other fests. What, if, is special or unique about OEF?

The OEF is special and unique to my eyes because ambiance is very cool, organization is perfect and it always sounds and feels underground. We’re underground supporters and OEF is an underground fest but with a professionnal organization (sound, timing, etc...) and that’s something I do really appreciate. Following this idea, a cool thing is the un-commercial feeling, the festival is totally dedicated to music, and only music, merch‘ stands are here because they’ve to be here, but they’re far away from the music place and that’s something interesting I think. And last but not least thing I think to is the boss : Curby. Whenever you ask him something, he always has 5 minutes to answer you, I find this crazy and it impresses me.

Do you think it makes any sense to organise a summer festival like OEF just for extreme bands?

Yes it does ! Due to my private life I can’t visit many festivals on summer, but the only one I always try to visit since 2003 is the OEF! Giving opportunity to 50 extreme bands to perform in perfect conditions is an excellent idea ! I know more and more French people that wanna go there, every year the fest is getting bigger, it means that this extreme idea is good!

INHUMATE

What is INHUMATE`s experience with playing big summer festivals?

We didn’t play in many summer fest, most know were FUCK THE COMMERCE, WALPURGIS METAL DAYS, HELL ON EARTH or SUFFERING LIFE FEST.

What is special for you when playing a summer festival? Do you like it better than a usual club tour or the other way round?

We don’t really care. Most important for us is that the crowd understand what we wanna say. Big fests like the OEF are cool because we can play in front of a large audience, smaller gigs are also cool because we need to feel the crowd sweat, never forget that INHUMATE are just four guys from the crowd on the stage, we’re no stars, just exteme grinding feeling maniax!

Any message to the fans who are going to come to OEF 2007? What can the fans be looking forward to from INHUMATE?

Be in front of the stage Saturday when we’ll play to feel an ultimate stage trance sickness time! Crowd, or maniax (but not „fans“, I don‘ really like this word) will see what the French underground looks like!

The old thrashers from Mlada Boleslav celebrate their 20th anniversary. They put their nowadays cult demo Vyznání Smrti (Death Confession) into the bases of the growing Czechoslovak extreme scene at that time. DEBUSTROL as the representatives of domestic thrash were therefore an obvious alternative for the Thursday OEF intro show THRASH ´EM ALL. Kolins, the founding member and head of the band, shared his view of OEF with us:

Two old thrash metal bands are untraditionally going to perform live on this year's OEF with DEBUSTROL being one of them. Are you not a bit afraid of the reception by the fans who love the most extreme music styles?

No, I am afraid of nothing. When SLAYER can play at the jazz festival in Montreaux, so why not us at Obscene ???

Will DEBUSTROL consider themselves as a regular band or anything like a bonus for fans on OEF?

Regular band.

Debustrol

What do you actually know about this festival? Why do play it?

I know just it is a festival that has no parallel here and maybe even in Europe and this is enough for me. That is why I am extremely glad to play it.

Are you a fan of big summer festivals? What do you think about an open air festival for the most extreme music styles like grind core or death metal? I assume you would not go for such a festival by yourselves.

I like summer festivals. It is pretty fun mostly. You meet other musicians you have no chance to meet during the year. It is good. As I have said a festival dedicated to these styles is unique.

Any message to the fans who are going to come to OEF 2007? What can the fans be looking forward to from DEBUSTROL?

DEBUSTROL are going to play their show with the utmost power and energy as always !!!

Having released its new mesmerizing record Shadows in the Light, IMMOLATION are to perform at the Brutal Assault festival this year in support of the release. Robert Vigna of IMMOLATION replied to questions related to the upcoming festival show.

Do you know the Brutal Assault Festival? What is the reputation of large European summer festivals in the U.S.?

We’ve heard of it before, but of course have never played it. Although we’ve beend around for a while we are pretty new to the Open Air Festival scene. The reputation of the Euro fests is known in the US as being some of the best! The fests in Europe are definitley top notch! We are really glad that we have the opportunity to play this year!

Are there differences between summer festivals in the U.S. and in Europe in terms of fans, bans, band backstage support, etc.?

I would say the Euro fests are alot more interesting. There are a couple of good ones in the US, like Ozzfest and Sounds of the Underground,.....but man when we played Fury Fest in 2005 the line up of bands I saw was just incredible! When you see Motorhead and Slayer back to back, thats a fest!! Hahah

IMMOLATION

Do you play frequently at larger summer outdoor festivals?

No like I mentioned earlier we are pretty new to this. The first time ever played an open air fest was in 2005, Graspop and Fury fest. This August we are actually going to play a number of others including Summerbreeze, Mountains of Death, Party San, etc....so we are pretty excited about it!

Is a festival performance any special for you compared to a club show? What do you prefer, a club show or a festival performance?

A festival performance is special in the fact that you get to play to so many people at one time. For us the performance that we put on is 100% the same as any small venue,..we actually prefer the small venue becasue it is more intimate with the crowd, and easier to get the feeling. On a big stage it is a little weird for us, but it is just a great opportunity to be able to play in front of such a large crowd!

What would you like to share with fans who are planning to go to the Brutal Assault this year? What can they expect from IMMOLATION?

They can expect 100% IMMOLATION, intense and extreme!!!! We can’t wait!!! See you there!

The Razor-Grind commando LENG TCH’E is about to perform at this year’s Brutal Assault. Nicolas of LENG TCH’E talks about their stage strategy to hammer and eliminate live.

Do you know the Brutal Assault Festival? Any references from other bands? Are you looking forward to playing there?

Definitely, we’re very much looking forward to it. I’ve only heard of Brutal Assault but we did play Obscene Extreme two years ago, so we know how crazy the Czech crowds are.

You played at the Obscene Extreme festival in the past. How do you like audience attending Czech festivals?

I love it! They’re totally into grind and death and the beers are cheap and large. What more can you ask for?

LENG TCH’E

Are you ever going to visit a festival as a fan, not as a performer?

Yeah, I usually visit Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium every year because it’s sort of a tradition. There’s no need to visit other festivals since they all have the same bands anyway./p>

Is it helpful for LENG TCH‘E to play larger festivals where most fans are going to see mainly the headliners?

It’s something you definitely need to do as a band to get exposure, but clubs shows are where you really make a connection. You can only hope that some people will remember you from the 80 bands that they saw and come to a smaller show later on.

What would you like to share with fans who are planning to go to the Brutal Assault this year? What can they expect from LENG TCH‘E?

Heavy, brutal, catchy metal music and an energetic performance. That’s what we try to bring everytime.

OEF loves ROTTEN SOUND! One of the highlights of this year`s show will be undoubtedly the Friday performance of these fiercely extreme Finns. The singer Keijo Niinimaa told us about the return to OE and a supershaker from Bozkov.

You have played two great shows at OEF. So, you can compare it to other fests. What, if, is special or unique about OEF?

OEF has always been a great experience for us. Being on stage has been awesome and it's been also great to hang-out through the whole festival and to meet the "cream" of grind/crust/powerviolence during that weekend. I believe that the location makes OEF very special. It's very nice to just sit down, have a beer and watch grind bands to change on stage. And when the prices have been also very low, people seem to come back to there year after year.

Do you think it makes any sense to organise a summer festival like OEF just for extreme bands?

Of course! It may seem a bit hard to the listeners, but the people who decide to come over are really so hard-core fans of extreme music, that they can take it just fine. OEF is not for someone, who listen to 15 minutes of Napalm Death once in a week. It's for people, who really need hours of grind in a week.

ROTTEN SOUND

Last year you played another Czech festival BA. What was your impression about playing back in Czechia?

It was really great, one of the high-points of the last summer. We were really amazed about the audience reaction over there even when we played pretty early on that bill. I really hope that we can do Brutal Assault again too some other year.

Do you often play annual summer festivals?

This summer is actually a bit slower than usual (5 fests booked), because we're focusing now on writing our next full-length album, "Cycles". But I believe that the next summer will be busiest one ever.

Any message to the fans who are going to come to OEF 2007? What can the fans be looking forward to from ROTTEN SOUND?

We plan to deliver scandinavian grind-core. The best way we can. There's going to be some songs from the latest albums/mini-CD and also some new ones from the album to come. After that (on friday night and through the whole saturday) we will show all the bands and people in the festival how much Finnish people can drink occasionally. I'm personally a bit scared of Bozkow since it really fucks up my system (too good tasting stuff...), but who cares, it's a festival and worst thing that happens is that I'm passing out after the show again like back in 2002. That's on "Murderlive"-DVD too...

The trio of BIRDFLESH from Sweden have proved since many years that grind core can be pretty fun too. In 2004 they convinced OEF for the first time they are really a merry bunch of perverts. The singer and drummer Smattro Ansjovis answered several obligato questions about performing at summer festivals:

You have played great shows at OEF. So, you can compare it to other fests. What, if, is special or unique about OEF?

OEF is absolutely one of the best festivals that a band can play. It's the whole atmosphere. So many crazy people come from all around the world to have a great time and there are no trouble at all. No fights or anything. Just pure fun and extreme music.

Do you think it makes any sense to organise a summer festival like OEF just for extreme bands?

Of course! People don't think that there are so many people that like this kind of music. But there are! I mean, OEF has been going on for over ten years now and every year it's a success.

BIRDFLESH

What is BIRDFLESH`s experience with playing big summer festivals?

Well, we haven't played too many big festivals really. We did OEF in 2004 and Brutal Assault in 2005. Besides them we played the Augustibuller here in Sweden two years ago. We love playing those kind of shows.

What is special for you when playing a summer festival? Do you like it better than a usual club tour or the other way round?

Both can be great. A small club gig can be really cool. You get closer to the crowd and it gets really intense. But a summer festival is the best I think. If the weather is good of course. I love the summer time so if it's warm and I get cold beer, I prefer the summer festival shows.

Any message to the fans who are going to come to OEF 2007? What can the fans be looking forward to from BIRDFLESH?

It's gonna be great to meet all our friends and fans. The show is gonna be like always: BRUTAL and FUN! See you soon. Cheers!!!

The Friday set of perverse beasts from Eindhoven in Holland will be for sure a delicacy for all gore maniacs. A scattrio that decisively saves neither blood nor black humour comes back to OEF after three years. The guitar player Dr. Dente spoke about a ROMPEPROP line-up change, OEF and big summer festivals:

You have played great shows at OEF. So, you can compare it to other fests. What, if, is special or unique about OEF?

We played the fest in 2004 and i remember when we started with rompeprop in 2001, we told eachother that the best gig we could play was obscene extreme so we where realy happy when we get that e-mail from you if we would like to play the fest! I would say a little dream come true!!! Obscene is unique because its a small fest ( if you look at fests like Wacken, or Summer Breeze) with only diehard underground freaks that live for death/grind!!! And it has way better beer than all the other fests haha!

Do you think it makes any sense to organise a summer festival like OEF just for extreme bands?

Hell yeah!! Its a fest where you can listen to bands from all over the world, bands that you never heard of maybe and discover that there are so many good bands that cant make it because of money or whatever... So KEEP IT UP!!!

ROMPEPROP

What is ROMPEPROP..s experience with playing big summer festivals?

We didnt play that much big fests but the ones we did where amazing! I have been going to outdoor fests for more than 12 years now and i went to a lot of them! Watching bands and getteing drunk! So its amazing to stand on stage and see people do the same as me when im a visitor, the bigest thing we played was the party-san in germany and that was another dream comming true!! Great vibe and people over there!!

What is special for you when playing a summer festival? Do you like it better than a usual club tour or the other way round?

Thats always hard to say, because playing on a big fest is amazing because you get the change to play for people that dont know you, and for fans at the same time, and show them a brutal 30 min of fucking gore grind!!! But playing in clubs is most of the time just for the people that love youre stuf so its closer to the real fans, and it sucks that on the realy big fests youre so far away from the fans!! Wich is perfect on obscene! Stage diving is a must!!!!!

Any message to the fans who are going to come to OEF 2007? What can the fans be looking forward to from ROMPEPROP?

Its gonne be a special gig for us because its gonne be the lats gig in origanal line-up!! Oure bass player is gonne do his last gig at the obscene extreme, after that he will leave the rompeprop clan!! So you better come up to the front and party youre asses of with us!! Expect lots of blood gore porn shit bowels and beers on stage!! We will see you there!!!! Cheers to all of you!!

After the last year`s reunion of the band we are honoured to introduce you the headliner of this year`s OEF. It is no one smaller than the New York grind core legend BRUTAL TRUTH. The questions regarding fests and especially OEF were answered by the founding member and bass player of BT Dan Lilker.

How well do you know the OEF and what do you know about it?

I've been hearing about it for a while now, my good friends in bands like Blood Duster and Malevolent Creation have told me we'll have a great fucking time, I know it's supposed to be a great extreme metal festival and I can't wait to get there and grind.

Is it a coincidence BRUTAL TRUTH come back to Europe just to play this cult festival?

Yes, it is. We reformed last year and now we have the opportunity to finally play OEF.

BRUTAL TRUTH

What is BRUTAL TRUTH`s experience with playing big summer festivals?

We have not done a lot of them and especially an all-brutal one like this.

Do you still remember your distant great show in Czechia (in Prague on tour with Macabre and Pungent Stench)?

Absolutely! Tons of maniacs, no toilet paper, great beer and lots of weed!

Any message to the fans who are going to come to OEF 2007? What can the fans be looking forward to from BRUTAL TRUTH?

Get ready for the extreme grind attack! Get us stoned and we will play even faster!!

One of the main stars of this year`s Obscene Extreme will be a sickly mad american brutal quintet WACO JESUS. We asked the frontman of the Illinois beasts Shana Bottens what we can be looking forward to on Saturday night except for the unmercifully devastating set.

How well do you know the OEF and what do you know about it? What reputation does it have in the USA?

I have followed this fest for years and have always wanted to play it. Each year it has gotten bigger and better because of the dedication and hard work of obscene productions. Fortunetly, we added to the amazing lineup this year and hope to add to its reputation as the best festival to play for extreme bands

Do you think it makes any sense to organise a summer festival like OEF just for extreme bands?

Anyone who organizes festivals like this are definetly hardcore fanatics of extreme music. You don't just throw something like this together and watch it grow into the fest it has become without loving this type of music. It takes great organizing, and alot of "behind the scenes" effort to keep brutal bands and thousands of fans coming back each year. Cheap pivo is also a plus.

WACO JESUS

Is there any similar festival in the USA?

No not even close. There are no outdoor festivals in the USA at all. Probably the closest thing would be the Maryland Death Fest or The Los Angeles Murderfest.

What is special for you when playing a summer festival? Do you like it better than a usual club tour or the other way round?

On a club tour you are not usually in town long, you get there, set up, tear down and then move on. Which is great but with a fest, you are able to hang out meet hundreds of people and drink with them for days. We have played other fests and always look forward to just watching great bands day after day, meeting other people and drinking to early morning. It just doesn't get much better than that.

Any message to the fans who are going to come to OEF 2007? What can the fans be looking forward to from WACO JESUS?

There are probably going to be alot of fans who have heard of us but never seen us. So my message is get ready for 35 minutes of SCUM GRIND and plenty of pivo. We will see all you at the bar. Hell we might even pass out in your tent. Cheers

GRAVE, the seminal death metal from Sweden, will play at the Obscene Extreme to perform the crucial blasts from the past, which became the legendary building bricks in the Swedish death metal scene. We met Ola Lindgren, the guitarist, vocalist and founding member, to ask about the band’s club and festival performace at home and abroad.

Do you know the Obscene Extreme festival?

Yes, I have heard about it. I’ve got the contact to it through the Dismember guys. I had heard the name before but they played there last year and said it was very well organized. I got in contact with Curby, and we met in Chemnitz in November last year (during their Masters of Death tour with Dismember, Entombed and Unleashed) and talked about it. I know it’s one of the two big festivals in the Czech Republic.

Is it different for you to play at home in Sweden compared to the rest of Europe?

Not really. This year, we have played a lot more shows in Sweden than we have for many years. I don’t know really why but it’s been very slow to play in Stockholm, it’s very hard to play in Gothenburg. The big cities are very hard to get good shows. This year we did seven or eight shows at home, which is more than we did in five years, probably.

How much support do you get for playing shows at home in Sweden?

There’s very few good clubs. Usually it’s some kind of a restaurant or something where they have a stage where you can play. It’s not many good places. There are really like clubs but as I said it’s very hard to get good shows. I think I’ve played Berlin more times than I have played Stockholm in my life or Hamburg or any of the big European cities.

Do you play frequently at larger outdoor festivals?

Not really. There’s anything that we can get, of course. That’s always cool thing to do but last year was very slow. The year before we had some, so it’s on and off every year. It all depends on when the album comes out and all that together. If we have a good release before the summer, then it’s more interesting for the promoters to book when there’s a fresh album.

GRAVE

Is the festival performance any special for you compared to a club show?

It’s very different because it’s always a lot more people, of course, but then it’s not the same. Club show is much closer because the audience is also closer than playing on a big stage with a security, fence and all that. But of course, both are very nice and the big festivals are always very cool to do. You meet a lot of people. There’s a lot of other bands you already know. You meet old friends.

What do you prefer, touring clubs or playing festivals?

I prefer doing one-off shows like big festivals because then it’s something special and you know before hand that it’s gonna be very well promoted and a lot of people there and almost every time it’s very well organized. Doing tours like this is always very difficult or very different from day to day.

Have you been thinking about the upcoming show at the Obscene Extreme? What are your plans for that show?

We will see what we do. We’ve been talking about to take up more old material to do for the longer sets. We will do, I don’t know, 45 or 50 minutes. If we play one hour or one hour and twenty minutes, then we have more time to get more songs in there. We’ve been thinking about taking up old songs that we haven’t done for a long time.

Anything specific?

A lot of old stuff, I think, mixed with maybe one or a couple of songs from the latest three albums. We always do Rise from Back from the Grave album. We always do Burn from the new one. Maybe some more: from Fiendish Aggression, we do Breeder almost every show we do. A couple of the newer ones and then the rest will be from the first three albums.

The evening of July 5th of this year's OEF will feature some remarkable thrash metal. The thrash metal keyword of the night will be the German legend ASSASSIN. Several very blatant questions were given to the guitarist Michael Hoffmann regarding their performance at the OEF.
The whole interview can be found here.

Two old thrash metal bands are untraditionally going to perform live on this year's OEF with ASSASSIN being one of them. Are you not a bit afraid of the reception by the fans who love the most extreme music styles?

I don´t think so. We play with other Thrashbands at that day as far as I know. From what I know the Thursday is a special old-school Metal warm-up show. I guess we will fit in perfectly.

Will ASSASSIN consider themselves as a regular band or anything like a bonus for fans on OEF?

You wouldn´t have asked that question in the 80´s, dude. You know, back in the old days we didn´t made a big difference between Thrash and Death Metal. People were listening to all kinds of Metal, Hardcore and also Punk. It’s all the extremer side of Heavy Metal. Look at Motörhead or AC/DC. They are very much respected by all kinds of Metalheads. I remember the Dynamo Open Air in Holland back at that time when Bands like TESTAMENT played along with STRYPER for example. No joke! Nobody would have thought about asking your question because all were Metal anyway.

Assassin

What do you actually know about this festival? Why do play it?

Well, I haven’t heard about this festival before Rudy (our manager) told me. He has contact with Curby (the main man behind the festival) for about a couple of years now. Curby is also an ASSASSIN fan from the old days. He came to our show in Prague December 2005 and as far as I saw, he liked it! You better asked him why he invited us for the festival... Now I know that this festival is a cult festival among the Death/Gore Metal fans and we are just proud to be part of it this.

Are you a fan of big summer festivals? What do you think about an open air festival for the most extreme music styles like grind core or death metal? I assume you would not go for such a festival by yourselves.

Sure, those summer festival are fuckin‘ cool. You have the chance to watch so many bands. It’s special, you know.

Is there anything you would like to share with people coming to the OEF festival? Are you planning a special show or something?

We do what we can do best: Kick fuckin‘ asses live on stage! You´ll get about 90 minutes of power. No fucking baloons or whatever.

GENERAL SURGERY will play at the Obscene Extreme Festival 2007 following a release of their debut album Left Hand Pathology last year by Listenable Records. Several questions were given to the guitarist Joacim Carlsson regarding their performance at OEF in 2004 and the upcoming show this year..

You have played at the OEF once before. What are your recollections of your performance at that time?

One of the best shows in the history of G.S. for sure. I was quite overwhelmed with the response, I think we all were actually. It was a great opportunity to show over 3000 people what we're capable of on stage. To top it off, we also had a guy in the pit breathing fire during one song that was really cool, although very irresponsible. Please, don't try that again, kids!

What do you think is the strength of this festival? What did you like about it?

To me it seems like everybody is there to have a good time and enjoy themselves, while seeing cool bands from all over the world. I never saw any violence at OEF, and that is kind of surprising since it was quite crowded and there was no guards. But I think the low count of guards is a good thing, most of the time they're just pissing people off anyway. I really enjoyed myself there, the beer was flowing and we met a lot of cool people and made a lot of new friends. Oh, the show was spectacular too!

Are Swedish fans familiar with the OEF? Is it a name that fans of this music know in Sweden?

Yeah, I think it's fair to say that OEF is quite well known in these parts. Lots of Swedes go there each year. Many bands want to play OEF, as it's the biggest festival of its kind in Europe. There are of course bigger festivals featuring extreme bands, but OEF is the one where all the really extreme bands gather so I think that it's very cool that it exists.

General Surgery

Are you looking forward to play at the OEF this year? What would you say to a person who has never been there and who is considering if to go to the festival or not?

But of course I am. We all are looking forward to topping our last performance in 2004. It's gonna be a hell of a good time, and I can't wait to go!
To the people who are thinking about going: just do it! You will get a ton of great bands, and you're guaranteed to discover a bunch of bands you've never heard of before as well. The atmosphere is relaxed and the beer is dirt cheap, so what are you waiting for?

What can your fans expect at the OEF 2007 from your performance?

I can safely say that we have quite a surprise in store for them, so if you're a G.S. fan - make sure you turn up, it's gonna be a unique show. I'm not gonna say anything more about it, you'll just have to wait and see. Looking forward to seeing you in the pit!

For the first ever, BEHEMOTH will play at the OBSCENE EXTREME FESTIVAL in Trutnov on thursday, july 5th. We have asked NERGAL the band´s voaclist and lead guitar palyer, a few questions related to the coming performance.

Do you know the Obscene Extreme Festival? How is it perceived in Poland, your home country?

Yes, I do know the festival, but I can’t say much because I really should ask people who go to see festivals. I usually play at festivals and have no time to go and see festivals. If I have some spare time, I just go anywhere but metal festivals. So, I can’t say. But it’s a known name and I remember seeing reviews of this festival, so it must be a recognized name.

You have played in a Czech festival once already. If we remember well, it was at the Brutal Assault in Prerov.

Yeah, we played there with The Haunted, I believe. It was a good one. I like Czech festivals because Czech and Slovakia are special. There’s a different vibe than in other festivals and I like that. It’s different than in Germany or anywhere else. You are definitelly more into grindcore and this kind of stuff but we try hard to establish our band, so it was a good offer and we definitelly go for it. That’s why we play at the Obscene Extreme.

Behemoth

Does it help you to establish your band more by playing festivals?

Always! Any show helps us whether it’s five people, fifty people, or five thousand people. It makes no difference as long as you make people happy with the music. That’s the main point.

Is it something special for you to play at summer festivals?

Yes, I love it. It’s more like a summer time. It’s fun and it’s holidays. That’s how I treat it. It’s not just like money making, it’s fun.

Is there anything you would like to share with people who are going to visit the festival?

They can expect chaos! When we go on, it’s going to be chaos, crazy fucking riot, and high-quality music in the first place.

Are you planning anything special for that festival performance?

In this festival, we will probably play new songs from the new record, which is coming out on July 3rd. It is just two days prior to that performance, so it’ll be like a premiere for us.
